I will share my personal story about living and growing up as a man with cerebral palsy and the challenges I have faced. I will speak about how our perception of what it means to be disabled both as an individuals and collectively is directly correlated to inclusion. When we view a disability as an asset that we can use to make a difference in the world rather than a detriment, we can open the eyes of others to possible avenues of inclusion.

Universal Design for Learning challenges education systems of the past by recognizing that one-size-fits-all learning fits no one. In this session, we will explore the concepts of barriers and variability in education, and learn how we can build learning experiences with firm goals and flexible needs to meet students where they are, regardless of their strengths and weaknesses.

This session will provide a comprehensive overview of extant literature concerning the importance of self-determination and its impact on postsecondary outcomes for students with disabilities. Participants attending this session will be able to (a) define the concept of self-determination; (b) describe the importance of self-determination for students with disabilities;  and (c) identify and evaluate current strategies and resources for teaching self-determination and how they can be integrated into the classroom environment.
